There's no better time to celebrate the incredible volunteers who make our neighbourhoods healthier and more connected.
At SASP (Somerset Activity & Sports Partnership) and Spark Somerset, we see every day how volunteers are the backbone of thriving local communities. While our work differs - from helping people move more and stay active, to supporting charities and community groups across the county - we are united by a shared belief: that people supporting people is what makes Somerset stronger, healthier, and more connected. This joint article celebrates the many ways volunteers help create positive spaces where both mental and physical wellbeing can flourish.
Take our Somerset Health Walks programme, trained volunteers lead free, friendly walks in a variety of different levels in towns and villages across the county that bring people together in the simplest yet most powerful way. For many, they provide a chance to talk, listen, and connect with others in a safe and welcoming space – they are not just walks, they are lifelines in the community.
"As a physiotherapist I was often suggesting health walks as a way to improve/increase fitness and mood, particularly where individuals struggled with motivation. Walking has been essential to my wellbeing throughout my life, particularly walking in nature, and I am keen to share this enthusiasm with others."
Loneliness and isolation can have a profound impact on our wellbeing. Volunteers, by just giving up a small amount of their time, help tackle this by opening up gentle, accessible opportunities for people to meet others and feel part of something bigger - whether it's someone new to the area, someone managing long-term health conditions, or someone who's simply had a tough week.
Volunteers receive training and ongoing support – but it's their kindness, warmth, and consistency that truly shape the experience. It's these small, consistent interactions that build trust, boost self-esteem, and open the door to better mental health for both the volunteer and participants, all while forming genuine friendships and stronger community ties.
Through Spark Somerset's volunteer platform Spark a Change, over 350 new opportunities were posted in 2024, covering everything from befriending and youth support to conservation and creative roles, signing up over 700 volunteers. Whatever your interest, there's a way to give back - and in doing so, be part of a kinder, more connected community.
Together, SASP and Spark Somerset are proud to champion this spirit of connection because when people feel like they belong, they're more likely to thrive.
